A second painting in the same roundism series, based on the variations on the same theme drawings I initiated last year. In this one I combined cubistic forms with pointillism. The latter was not the plan as I wanted to execute my graphite pencil drawing Nude 28-04-15 in oil.
There are times an artist can turn everything into gold and times that one is in doubt and a chosen path once trodden leads to a dead end. Such times occured in this one and I was so totally dissatisfied that I did not know what to do with it. An artist like me has to choose something: either smash it into smithereens or keep your head cool and ponder. So I did and after a while it occured to me that I never combined my personal roundism style with pointillism in which style I only made a single oil painting so far. Why not give it a shot.
After regrouping myself I also came to see that my color mix was too strong. I used a lot of pinks, reds and mean greenies. The scheme as such was not too bad but the saturational degree, harmony and interrelations of plains standing too much on their own. They were dire and exhausting to look at for a longer period of time. I remembered the theory of divisionism as practised by impressionists and pointillists like Signac, Seurat, van Rysselberghe and others.
The trick is to put for example complementary colors next to eachother so they converge at a distance in the eyes of the spectator that gazes at the cumulative effect of all colors, still being able to detect the separate color plains at the same time. And so it worked!
