Different Approach

The Nieuwe Veenmolen dating back from 1652 is situated near to where I live. The mill is on the route to my studio where I teach and is one those ancient landmarks. It therefor stands out in all things modern around it like the railway next to it. I am always intrigued by it. Maybe it is because there is not a single day that it appears different due to the change of light. Last summer I saw a thatcher repairing the roof. For some reason I thought it would be fun to include him in the drawing. In deviation of my first drawing of this mill I changed the style into hatched strokes. Also the position is from the other side and of course the addition of color. I like change everything but the motif once in a while and see what that might bring me.

Different Styles

There is this ever search for harmonizing all kinds of different styles from the past. I included luminism, pointillism, impressionism, realism, cubism, expressionism and of course my personal style roundism. Consequently in this one I tried to make a kind of perfect mix. The ultimate goal was to make the abstract unavoidably plausible through the placement of figurative key elements. This way, I thought it would be hard for people to refute what they see. Nevertheless the tree in the back at the right is heavily abstracted. Such is the willow tree in the front whereas the mill deliberately has been kept more realistic. Nothing more sad than people reject art for the wrong reasons. Perhaps you will be fooled too?
