Roundism – 07-09-18

Second One

This graphite pencil drawing ‘Roundism – 07-09-18’ is the first one of my Spanish model Julia Gómez Avilés. The second one soon would follow. In preparation of the long pose for the pastel she did some stretching and almost dance-like movements. I never have met such a model in the past. Many strike poses that are static, sitting still for the artist. She moved her body on my sofa like a ballerina. Sometimes I asked abruptly to stop for a second, then took a photo. The result was the pose for this drawing. It creates a whole different one I am used to get from other live models. I like the extreme bend-over of her leg. Obviously it’s not your regular pose, not even something you would stage. That makes it all the more fun and a wonderful challenge for an artist like me. This having said, then what?

Clairobscur Impressionistic

At first I didn’t have a clue what to do with it. Executing such a pose in a pure realist style only seemed akward to me. Therefor, I tried to mimic some circular movements of the body. I connected them to the negative space around her. However, the result is rather clairobscur impressionistic but still bears all the roundist features of my own style. I wanted to let both styles touch eachother. This way the abstract roundism idea can only be interpreted through the impressionistic / realistic impression. Some final thoughts: I think this might the essence of my endeavors. Throwing every style I like in the mix and see what may come. Isn’t that the only thing we  artist can do? Nothing comes out of nothing. We can only stand on the shoulders of artist before us. We become – apparently – original in our own proclaimed styles.
