Roundism  04-07-17

Consecutive Steps

For this graphite pencil roundism drawing I used the same image as for the pastel drawing ‘Into the Light – 15-06-17‘. That one I made for the sake of applying divisionist principles but also as a prestudy for other works to come, a simple tactic I used before. I find it very reassuring to study anatomy and composition first before adding styling and abstraction. Taking these consecutive steps I can steer the uncertain process better, even though that constitutes a contradictio in terminis. On the other hand it sums up what artists like me face every day: creation is ploughing trough a swamp of uncertain nothingness. All road signs and beacons are absent. I feel like I am on the edge of the universe, creating towards the endless void.

Linking Segments

For almost 5 decades now I have learned to jump over these pitfalls and another succesfull strategy is to link segments. I have mastered anatomics, tonal scales, picked up a feel for Tamara de Lempicka body mass style of depiction and many more. The way to go for an artist is to combine these segments of knowledge and link them to eachother. For that matter I linked a cubist styling to impressionism and realism. In this particular case I added my singularity theory I developed some time ago and linked that to a little anatomic and proportional distortion. I quite like the result which was not what I had in mind and surely that is a good sign.

Oil Painting

This art work is followed by an oil painting ‘Roundism – 11-02-18’ in which I added the element of color (complementary scheme of reds and greens). I did not change the composition and execution of the forms though because I still liked them the way I rendered them in this drawing.
