Surely it is time to pay homage to Eugène Durieu, especially his photograph of a seated female nude. This time I found it was time to return to straight cubist planes after the latest anaglyphical experiment.
Golden is my new project I finished just ago. I thought it was time to extend the Golden series with another oil paint. Golden – 18-05-22 was the last one and I didn’t know what forms to solarize and to style cubistically next.
Blue Velvet is my next one after the more comprehensive work on Geesje Kwak. Time for an elaboration of a previous drawing Solarised Roundism – 01-07-22.
This graphite pencil drawing ‘Solarized Roundism – 01-07-22’ is a welcome change from oil painting. After the completion of ‘Geesje Kwak and the Secret of the Universe – 28-06-22’ it was time to return to sketching.
Finally, a new drawing and it is a new Solarized Roundism. The last solarized one I did was ‘Risque – 31-03-22’. Graphite pencil drawings do not come popping up weekly anymore since I put my mind to oil painting back in February. Occasionally one is fininished as a result of some spare time I have, waiting for my students at Brugman Art. So is this one.

My graphite pencil drawing Wag the Dog – 26-09-21 was waiting on the shelf to be put into oil. After my last oil Slava Ukraini – 18-04-22 I thought I’d use another surrealist theme and why not?
The West has recently become familiar with the phrase ‘Slava Ukraini’. Obviously everyone who is a democrat and values freedom above all can support the meaning of this slogan.
This oil painting ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ is born out of some kind of felt urgency. Never before in my life I longed for Spring and Summer in particular than this year.
This oil is an ode to Tamara de Lempicka and why not? Since I haven’t enjoyed a formal training I had to learn directly from all great masters. Surely I consider her to be one because she developed a distinct style to call her own.

This Risque oil looks like a wild Liberace. Or could it be that I was inspired by the song ‘Digital Love’? Often I get these almost synaesthetic feelings whilst listening to music.
A new Risque oil painting in the Series by same name. After my last one I wanted to wander in a straight linear landscape again. The motif for this one was based on my colored pencil drawing ‘Risque – 01-22’.
This roundism oil painting is quite different from the last roundistic one, called ‘Singularity – 23-12-21’. Whereas the latter was all about the use of shiny colors, the experiment at hand has another color range.
Risque is the title of a new oil, in fact a new series. I felt this one was urgent and below I explain why. The lovely means by making my visual point is the depiction of model Julia Gómez Avilés. It was wonderful to work with her again
After careful considering I chose for a rendering with hatched strokes like I am used to in doing pastels and many a drawing, even though this is the first time in oil.
In November 2018 I started this project after a prestudy in graphite ‘An archeological memory of Bettie Page – 13-11-18’. Since the canvas size of this painting is bigger than the original drawing the balance between main theme (camel, statue and stele) and the negative space around it should show more coherence.
A continuation of the previous painting called ‘The Implicite Order – 20-02-20’, commissioned by an American collector.
Drawng often is called the primary process and I like it so much, brimming over with an ocean of ideas, that I forget about transfering those ideas to the secondary stage: the canvas. There always is something to dust off and in 2017 I used ‘Nude – 03-09-15’ to work out a bigger theme, called ‘The Widow of Aleppo – 18-05-17’, after Rembrandt’s painting Jeremiah lamenting Jerusalem’s destruction. Since the war in Syria sort of came to an end but the people still suffer, I found it appropiate to do this anew but then in oil.

This oil painting is the final piece on the series of the pastel and graphite pencil drawing on the same theme. I decided to abstract the female figure even more, reducing the oily reflections on her body to cubist planes, creating rhythym and diction of light and dark tones.
Based on two previous artworks: a pastel called ‘Into the light – 15-06-17’ (impressionistic, surrealsitic) and a graphite pencil drawing ‘Roundism – 04-07-17’. I liked both works and took the colour scheme of the pastel drawing in reds and greens but also used the roundism style of the pencil drawing and combine them.
The result of so many prestudies in graphite and pastels resulted in the culmination of all efforts into this oil painting. The dimension of colour gives it an extra swirl.
