Roundism – 03-09-19

A great Vintage Photo

Some time ago I found a great vintage photo online that inspired me to transfer it in my roundism style. Surely those 1920s and 1930s pictures are the best. They are full of light, dark and mid tones, all well balanced out. They ooze out a feel of art deco even though they probably won’t all be. Therefor I think they beat contemporary photos by a mile most of the time. Time to put back tonal values, the basic building blocks of all things artistic, on the menu.

Basic Geometrics

Basic geometric shapes like triangles and circles were to designated forms to strengthen the pyramid like pose. Adding a black square to the right of the model’s head was meant to honor Malevich, founder of the suprematism movement. Furthermore I kept some figurative recognition in the breasts and face. By this the beholder will be tricked into believing he or she actually is looking at a model. nothing but geometrical forms are depicted though.

Into the light

The diagonal light block hits her face so the focus is centralized from the hip to her head. Through this a sort of St. Andrew’s cross composition is gained and by that the necessary dynamics I needed. Next to this I kept a very sharp contour delineation on the left side of the body. It takes care of enforcing the highlights on the left side of her body. Therefor it looks a bit sharper than my graphite pencil drawing ‘The Nude Portal – 03-07-19’. Another aspect is that I tried to combine straight and round forms. In the past I employed them with varying degrees of success. I think in this study they are in balance though.
