Roundism – 13-03-18 (sold)

Herman Gouwe

In my search for roundism I often wander through the history of art. With this intention some years back I saw an incredible oil painting by Herman Gouwe of a sunset (De Maaier) in cyan, yellow, purple and red and I it baffled me. It was an exact match to an extraordinary experience I had some time ago: Driving in my car a low December sun was shining very brightly on a wet road and I saw the reflected sun light of Herman Gouwe’s 4 colours appear in my eyes. I am not a medical doctor but I think it must have tickled my cone cells in my eyes, hence the colours created by them. Bright shining light never could be portrayed better than in such fashion.

Building a Bridge

It maybe that these findings build a bridge between impressionism and expressionism because in this specific case (interpreting the effects on sunlight) the latter is entwined with the first. It is because of people like Herman Gouwe that I realize I am standing on the shoulders of many before me. Previous work like Model Session 2 @ Rotterdam  – 20-10-17 also is such a cross-over. Once in a while in retrospective one can understand what an everlasting search have brought. Combining styles?

Further Combining

Through this art work and many other like Monet, Cézanne, Rik Wouters Tamara de Lempicka, etc., I came to realize the last years I wanted to create a mix of impressionistic, expressionistic, luministic and cubistic styles. Certainly it is not a spasmodic attempt to replace many visions by one single vision but to see if a new style will appear.
