A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Roundism – 29-11-17)

A Midsummer Night’s Dream

Based on an earlier roundism graphite pencil drawing ‘Roundism – 12-10-15’ when I was still inventing my roundism style. Lately I felt it is time to introduce the realm of colours in my works of art as to this variety of cubism. I wanted the woman to appear in some kind of midsummer night’s dream. She would be girdled with lots of yellow, blues, added with some purples and pinks. The yellow / purple, orange / blue and even red / green complementary contrasts create smashing light effects. Not exactly colors you might see at night but hey, in dreams everything is allowed! I found especially the color purple suited to convey this dreamy atmosphere I already managed to create in graphite. Perhaps she is dreaming about her lover and longing for his return? What she ponders is not very important, the sensuality of the model speaks for itself.

Pastelmat

I liked what Pastelmat by Clairefontaine could offer me. It did live up to my expectations but it eats up a lot of my pastels so I had to buy new ones today. Luckily it stays in the drawing rather than falling off (which happens to other pastel papers a lot). The paper also attributed to a new way of rendering. I hardly rubbed my pastels out like so many romantic pastel artists. Rubbing out or blending easily tends to make colors rather merky but in this case rubbing all purples and blues seemed like a good idea. I had to take care though I would not touch the yellow parts. Purple and yellow are complementary enemies and let them affect eachother would turn it in greys and browns.

The built-up of the pastel is here.
