This pastel pencil drawing ‘Studio 1930 | The Curl – 2026-07-15’ is a study after swirly curls. A quick one I must say but there was a strong, two-fold motivation. Last Monday I found this incredible cheaply priced pack of Ami sketching paper, type ‘KBB’, at Brugman Art. The temptation pulled me in, and I yielded. You see, the texture and color is beautiful, even though is just mere study sketching paper. I needed to buy some for my art classes anyway. Since summer season has arrived I even have some time to sketch myself during art classes. Consequently, this drawing came out on a whim or was it?
Enter reason two: a great photo by Laure Albin Guillot, whose photos inspired me in the past. Her feeling for lighting is astonishing. Typically, 1930s of course. Then again, I’ve seen many photos of her contemporaries, but she is queen of them all. The reference photo remembered me of a model, named ‘Assia Granatouroff’, the like of which I captured in a series. However, I doubt this is her, even though her thick blonde curls remind me of her. I remember how fun it was to capture hers in my graphite pencil drawing ‘Neo Deco – 2024-10-08’.
That one shows quite some abstracted curls. This time I had less pretentions, just a test of the paper and no fancy cubist styling this time. This paper, I must say, is a delight to work on. The mid-tones came out just very nicely. A student tonight couldn’t believe the mid-tones were indeed the paper’s natural hue. She thought I had added some kind of skin color. That proves my point: the paper is fit for showing skin colors in the mid-tones. However, its color is not even fleshy. Such gives me more motivation to do some more. Summer will be long and if classes stay half full, I’m willing to do some more.
