This pastel pencil drawing ‘Deco Reverie – 2026-07-18’ is a cubist expression of my love for curly hair. All things curved in his one. Again, this beautiful Ami sketching is the carrier of this artwork and why not? Shy of a week since I discovered it at Art Supplies store Brugman Art but already a favourite. This is already number three and still a bit of an experiment, getting the hang of it. Working on this paper enables me to move quickly. Mostly under a couple of hours the drawing is finished. Not that the aspect of time is decisive, but it supports the flow an artist gets in. Somehow, when you have to plan too many details, the stream of artistic ideas can be reduced. Just like making love to a beautiful lady and wanting to get the atmosphere right, kills all things romantic.
This having said, I immediately saw this incredible element of flow throughout a reference picture. Allegedly, taken by French photographer Jean-Marie Auradon. However, I didn’t know the man and there is no Wikipedia page to be found. There is this beautiful model reclining downwards. Obviously in the nude but I was only attracted by her hair, facial features and arm. The stress lies on the wavy hair, occupying almost 2/3 of the total paper surface area. The foreshortening of the arm to the left is a bit funny though. On the photo she seems to push her arm a bit forward, so it looks a bit shorter. Nevertheless, I’m quite happy the way this drawing came to be. Curves in the neck, armpit, deltoid and inside elbow reflect the curls to the right. Quite a different drawing than last one.
