Cat Stevens’?

This pastel pencil drawing ‘Morning has Broken – 2026-07-27’ reminds you of Cat Stevens’ famous song. However, it refers to the angular structures. You see, I find myself right on track with this new series on AMI sketching paper (‘KBB’). Not a real distinct series though, because of the different styles involved. This new paper I started to employ is the common factor. Last one was bit of magic realism. This time I had it in me to create a very quick, effective, cubist drawing. Something executed under two hours. One hour is too quick and I really only manage that during a modelling session. Some abstraction, even though minimalistic and effective, requires more thinking time after all.

The Morning Glow

The motivation for this artistic motif came from a great photo of a reclining. I remembered I had the exact same pose taken by my regular model years ago. One on my bed one time in the morning. My bedroom faces east and the morning glow always wakes me up. These model sessions are the best because the light razors over the upper side of the body. It tears it apart like fragmented facets. Triangular structures I always like best because they serve all things dynamic in a work of art. Anyway, the poses were almost similar, even though my window stretches out to the full width of the paper.

M-figure

Basically, I focused on the gigantic slanted ‘M’-figure, created by her hands and both legs. The fun part is that I let so many parts open. Hence, the connection between the body and its surrounding negative space. Next to this, I changed the ethnicity of the woman and turned her into a blonde caucasian. My model is beautiful and Indian. However, her dark hair contrasted too much, and the body already shows a lot of darker tonal regions. The thicker lighter locks just contrast with the darker regions of her facial features. Last but not least, I only indicated the sheets and pillow indicatively. Some planes rubbed out in light and dark tones and some key power lines. That’s all.
