A Day at the Beach – 16-03-19 | Surrealist Graphite Drawing
Concept and the Pareidolia Effect
A Day at the Beach – 2019-03-16 is a surrealist graphite drawing that explores human perception through the psychological phenomenon of pareidolia. This optical illusion triggers the subconscious mind to recognize familiar, concrete figures within abstract environmental patterns. For a deeper understanding of how this mechanism influences my creative process, you can read my comprehensive guide on the pareidolia effect in art.
The artwork originated during a visit to the Dutch coastline. Under the influence of the shifting maritime landscape, the natural interaction of waves, sand, and horizon transformed into a metaphysical composition. Instead of a literal representation, the drawing captures hidden figures emerging from nature. Most notably, the composition conceals the distinct silhouettes of a gorilla and a shark woven into the coastal textures, inviting the viewer to decode these and other subjective shapes.
