Delft – 19-08-17 (sold)

Second Saturn Rocket

This graphite pencil drawing ‘Delft – 19-08-17 (Sold)’ is a surrealist one. One time I was finding myself steering my bike to Delft. I drove along the river Vliet where I saw the Tour de Rijswijk passing by. Such resulted in a first drawing ‘Tour de Rijswijk – 20-07-17’ inspired by this trip. That’s how it goes: answering to an inner urge you often come across sceneries that all make sense eventually. Not aware which drawings I would make at that time. However, once I was walking towards the market something struck me. It was the ‘Nieuwe Kerk’ (New Church) towering over Delft. Somehow it reminded me of the Dom in Utrecht. A couple of months before I drew ‘Ascension – 24-05-17’. In that one I made the Dom take off like a Saturn rocket. Why not doing that the second time around?

Knights Templar

Unlike the first time I decided to not create a gigantic blast-off into the sky. Instead, depicting a launching tower was enough. As a testament to my imagination gone wild I included myself whilst drawing the actual scenery. Of course I also let some knights templar wander trough the drawing. Since Loving the Alien (2011) (Sold) they represent all religious yet futile. Just as futile as sitting in a cold church on a Sunday morning listening to a needless speech. The church is the same one as caught in the light on Vermeer’s View of Delft by the way. A mattter of how you see things. He saw it as glorious symbol of the House of Oranje-Nassau. 350 years later I don’t feel for that glam anymore.
