A 4th tribute to Man Ray (Lee Miller) – 03-11-14 (sold)

Hardly Any Value Added

This one is another cubistic tribute to Man Ray and Lee Miller altogether. Basically I followed the photograph but only added cubistic styling. The main goal was to underlign his invention of solarization and surrealist style, not to alter the shapes too much. After all, how can you add value to a magnificent art work.

Extrapolation

When I drew this one I really was into extrapolation lines running from inside the positive form of the body. I simply let them run outside into the negative space and see what new froms might bring me. I had developed this theory that new forms arising from this extrapolation would match and relate to the positive form. Such would work rather subconsciously at first sight and I in retrospective I still subscribe to this principle.

Dissociation

The process of extrapolation actually was my first method to break through something many artists are faced with. I discovered that, in order to create art a certain crisis is needed. The normal way of living is to associate everything you see with what it is or represent. However, this can only spawn hyperrealism in the end. After than an artist like me will hit a brick wall. There is no way to go from there. As I value my (artistic) freedom as most important I had to avoid that brick wall of sheer nifty craft. Extrapolation brought me dissociation, a path that leads to surrealism. Another path is abstraction but that is another story for another time to tell.

Some time later I made my last ‘Tribute to Man Ray (Lee Miller) – 22-04-16 (sold)’ and I consider that a worthy conclusion of the Man Ray series. No need to do more.

This one is with a private collector from the United States.
