Sometimes cementeries can be fun, especially when they are old and situated near old churches and trees in the midst of Beek, Gelderland, Netherlands. I know this one for all my life and its official name is the ‘Bartholomeuskerkje’. That is where I went for a sketching session with my dad last Thursday where I did 90 percent of the drawing. It was a great session with lots of sunshine in the middle of a Corona crisis. Being on the cementary though with the sun casting beautiful shadows did not give me a eery feeling though and the dead remain quiet that afternoon.
Doing a piece alla prima (in one go at the very spot) is fun but it is often that you change a thing or two after the live session. I once understood Claude Monet did the same and often made oil sketches outdoors for to work them out in his studio. Basically I do the same or what I have to do, when I let the photo be the inspirational motif, is that I actually have to be there at least once, so I can relate to the subject. Nothing beats the feeling of painting and sketching outdoors though.
Today I added some leafs in the chesnut trees in the front and accentuated the vintage bricks and boulders in church wall. Furthermore I made the sky a little darker for the roof top to pop out maximally. In the background the newer“Sint Bartholomeuskerk” is visible.
