A Pose Analysed

This pastel pencil drawing ‘Cubist Repose – 2026-07-29′ shows my regular model again. A beautiful compact, introspective posture. Her torso is slightly inclined forward as if she is strutting her pose with gusto. However, her arms are crossed tightly in front of the body. With one hand he is clasping the opposite upper arm, creating a closed and protective gesture. The head turns gently to the side, suggesting withdrawal or quiet contemplation. The legs remain close together, reinforcing the overall sense of containment. Angular planes and sculptural shading emphasize the tension between vulnerability and structural strength. It gives the pose a calm yet powerful geometric presence. All in all, double signals: self-confidence and vulnerable at the same time. Would you have it any other way? A lovely challenge to capute all that in essential cubist planes.

Open Structures

Quite different from last pastel pencil drawing ‘Morning has Broken – 2026-07-27’. Such was a more playful pose. Same model but now with her own facial features. More or less, because out of privacy reasons I don’t include a full resemblance. Even though the poses are different, the execution is not. Well, at least from a perspective of ‘openess’ I strived for. Again, my aim was to keep the structures of the body forms open, so they would connect to the surrounding areas. Because I know her body features so well, I got her on paper within an hour. Sometimes an artist really can struggle with facial features for example. Don’t make it worse by rubbing it in. Not this time though, I only did some much to get it right and I was brave enough to keep it this way. Not overproducing it but efficient drawing again.
