Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen – 15-03-21

Het Depot

Rotterdam’s latest acquisition is the Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen. There was this online première in Januari 2021 during corona times but it drew less attention than deserved. Upon my word, I declare ‘Het Depot’ or in slang Rotterdam ‘De Pot’, a new wonder of the world. Surely it looks like a rather plump shiny pot but it is grand and stacked full of art. Boijmans therefor is the first to offer access to its entire collection in this new art storage facility. I look forward to visit it one time soon after the current lockdown has come to an end.

A City Mirrored

When in front of the Depot Rotterdam city is reflected in a network of mirrored glass covering the entire building. It is an amazing site to see. They even have a roof garden on top and I read there will be a restaurant too. I can imagine myself sitting there, getting sloshed after visiting the museum. Of course all this is reason enough to do put it on paper. After all, it has been a while I visited the place and made a drawing of Rotterdam.

Elephants

So there I was, still admiring the spot and contemplating a graphite pencil drawing. Now, you would not believe it if I told you so but all of a sudden Heinkel bombers flew over. Unfortunately that is  a scene all to familiar to Rotterdam. However, they dropped elephants on parachutes this time. Then I knew I have seen these elephants before and I even made a couple of drawings of them. At long last, the dutch elephants reappeared and they grow in number steadily. Nature always finds a way to balance herself and I suspect she even like art museums. How do I know? I saw it myself.
