A sketch of estate ‘Voorlinden’ (at Wassenaar, Netherlands), bought by Mr. Caldenborgh who built a fine museum of modern art next to the old manor some time later. I remember I sat there and one of the charming aspects of sketching outdoors that you get to know the area so much better than looking at it for just an instance. You discover what animals, like birds and hares, there are and where they dwell. Also the biker lane behind you can serve as a distributor of news: what people pass by who live close or are they tourists. Sometimes fragments of conversations drift by, telling me how I can see the landscape in relation to its inhabitants.
The tree branches in the front serve as some kind of repoussoir because the meadows in the middle look rather weak from a tonal point of view.
