One in the series I made of the Gemeentemuseum at The Hague, Zuid-Holland, Nederland. To honour Mondriaan I made it in a cubistic way. His study of cubism gave rise to modern and abstract art as we know it. I love this museum even though it changed its name to the almost pleonastic ‘Kunstmuseum’.
I was so attracted by the appearance of the building, built by Berlage, that I drew it a couple of times like the previous drawing Gemeentemuseum 05 (2014). In the first three pastels I tried to come to an abstraction and they certainly are appealing. This drawing though I like the best because the tonal range is to my liking, suggesting lots of depth and all aspects of the building (plains, walls) are best served with a perfect mix of sunlight, core and cast shadows.
I tried to keep the foms open as much as I could, so they can breathe into the negative space around them. The plains that serve as water reflections are softer than the ones casting the reflection but add to the pleasant confusion the combined view all plains offer the spectator. The general recognition of the scenery is easily to be grasped when the drawing is to be watched with a diffused gaze anyway.
