On My Way Home

This graphite pencil drawing ‘The Laakmolen – 26-04-19’ is a nice dark one with some lights erased back in it. One day I came to pass it on my way back home. I had a wonderful dinner with one of my students in Voorburg and biked along the Trekvliet. At the end near the Neherkade there it stands, forlorn between modern and very uninteresting buildings. Completely hidden in plain sight one can say. I never have laid eyes on the sight before even though I have driven past it for years. Sometimes you discover them: hidden gems tucked away in modern society.

Bright Lights, Big City

It is an ancient mill allegedly painted by Vincent van Gogh himself. That night I quickly took a picture of the mill surrounded by citylights. These sights simply need to be unrevealed to the public. Modern architecture does nothing to me anyway. The challenge was to darken things up maximally and still be able to depict contour delineations. That night bright lights in the city in the back pierced my eyes. These serve as focal points. I just adore this kind of lighting, turning the scenery nicely chiaroscuro. A bit of impressionism in my hatched strokes style.

Within One Hour

In this series of small drawings I used this picture only to roughly sketched it within the time limit of one hour. That A6 format does the job very well just like with the previous one ‘Clingendael – 25-04-19’. I continue practising drawing like that for the beautiful season to come.
