Meyendel – 26-02-15

Near The Hague

Meyendel is a park to the north of The Hague, near Wassenaar, part dunes, part forest where I like to come often. It is marked by all kinds of trees and especially the pines I love to draw and paint. They can be deformed by the south-west wind and take on baroque shapes. This pastel drawing is a slight expressionist one. The next day I made Meyendel – 27-02-15, a cubistic variation on this pastel drawing.

Color Scheme

Certainly have I been always fond of using pinks and purples in landscapes. In this respect I feel more related to impressionists and expressionists like Monet, Signac, Pissarro, Cézanne, Toorop, Sluijters, Gestel and the list goes on and on. I realized that even more when I visited the ‘Color Unleashed’ exhibition in 2015 / 2016 at the Kunstmuseum, The Hague. There was not a single painting that did not contain a reasonable amount of pinks, also as an integral part of vegetation such as grasses and trees. So I did see it right in advance!

Cross-over

Personally I think this one serves as a cross-over after the first pastel Meyendel 10-02-15 in this Series. I see that I layed some grainly pastel plains and hatched pastel strokes in other parts. Besides this I also employed a neat trick: tree branches high up I made slightly lighter and colorful. In my eyes sunlight seems to radiate around these branches and they turn into brighter colors than a wide treetrunk that can block more light. Such a trunk therefor remains much darker and greyish / brownish of nature than thes delightful twigs of color.
