Sometimes I find a nude model so perfectly shaped in round forms that the only way to add value is by means of recreating her through squares and straight lines. Once in a while it feels like a relief to escape from roundism, like my last graphite pencil drawing ‘Roundism – 26-10-19’. I found that one attractive and typical for the style and sometimes it feels right to do something completely different.
I strived for a little distortion so the bodyscape would interact and breath with the negative space around it. Therefor I exaggerated the dark tones in some blocks in order to create the necessary rhythym and diction. Additionally I did some invertion of forms like the edgy shape of the breast. It was perfect to be reflected by a inverted dark structure to the right of it.
The dark and light atmosphere could remind you to the feel of art deco. Even though that era is gone now, I still like the play with dark and light that is one of the typical aspects of deco in my eyes. Of course the fact that the reference picture comes from that era has got something to do with it.
