Different Execution

This graphite pencil drawing ‘Nude – 25-02-16 (Sold) is my next one after the last one two days ago. Different execution, same woman though. It’s my regular model that poses for me for three years already. Last drawing I drew her in a rather angular way. That was due to her upper arms held in a vertical position. However, this time I was attracted to the curvature of her hips, buttocks and legs. Maybe it’s one of those principles I honor. First there is a key feature striking me. Then I try to put the stress on it, even exaggerating it. Quite a formalist approach, I must admit and also very much in contrast with my surrealist stuff. Could it be I want to be both a formalist and a narrator as well? Can an artist master both?

Freedom

Let me tell you about my endeavors as to this one. Lately I am all about opening up positive forms and let them breathe into the negative space. Therefor I wanted to open up body shapes this time as well. The eventual goal is to let the spectator wander through them freely without being blocked by a closed form. It’s no secret that I’m all about freedom. Hence my wish people will fall in love with my artworks because they experience the same. After all, who doesn’t want to feel free? Writing about it doesn’t do me good because I am a visual artist. Symbols such as the peace symbol won’t do. Also people stretching their arms out in the open sky or images the like are too corny for me. Instead I trust people subconsciously will dig my concept of freedom and how my way of depicting works.
