Nude (after Breitner’s photograph)- 22-04-17 (sold)

Breitner at the Gemeentemuseum

I was at ‘Rumour in de Stad’ exhibition at the Gemeentemuseum (now ‘Kunstmuseum’) where I saw Breitner, Israëls, among others and this drawing is derived from a photograph Breitner took more than a century ago. Like me, he used photos as reference material for his paintings and drawings. This drawing is to honor him. The advantage of these old pictures is that they are razorsharp. The disavantage however is a very small scale. How did he manage to use it? With a magnifying glass?

Abstraction

The model tucked her head under a cushion or some blanket and because of that the scenery looks rather dreamy and/or mystique. Maybe that is why I rendered it with a fairly high degree of abstraction. As such it look a bit like the abstraction in my graphite pencil drawing Nude 17-09-15, attracted as I am by the idea the spectator has to take some effort to recognize all forms and forge them into one image that makes sense.

Folds and Body Parts

While drawing I saw a correlation between the folds in the blanket she is reclining on and the body parts like legs and arms. Gazed at superficially they seem to be one. My task was to turn them into an attractive diagonal rhythym of light and dark plains and not loose the eventual recognition. What do you think? I sold it anyway.
