Oude Kerk (The Old Church) at Voorburg – 15-12-17

Beauty All of a Sudden

There I was, in front of the the Old Church (Oude Kerk or St. Martin’s Church) in Voorburg. I went out for a drink with an friend and I was a little early, standing in front of it. Even though I have passed this scenery a thousand times before that night I was struck by the lighting. It came from below almost setting the church on fire. Strange how you pass by things without taking notice, only for to discover their beauty all of a sudden. Surely we can’t stand still and appreciate all things nice. We need to filter too. As an artist though I still need to calm down my mind regularly. That is because by life depends on discovering what needs to be unrevealed to the public. I am the tool for doing so.

Roundism around the Church

The features of the tree branches and the church inspired me to do a cubist drawing. It is rendered in the same style as my graphite pencil drawing ‘Dordrecht – 07-12-17’. This one is more hefty though from a tonal point of view. I started with the tree and I rendered it in my roundism style. I also strongly focused on the tonality at the same time. It all was about blocking the lights on the church. The branches of the tree were only slightly different from the dark sky from a tonal perspective. That proved to be a tough cookie but necessary in order to avoid a dark lumpy void altogether. It was working hard to hatch up the paper to an almost blackness but rewarding though. All in all this has been a great experiment.
