Carthaginian Waiting for Her Hero’s Return – 29-12-14

Tunesian Woman

This piece ‘Carthaginian waiting for her hero’s return – 29-12-14’ stands on its own I think. Some years back I came in contact with a young Tunesian woman Asma on Facebook. She had this great profile picture of her sitting on the dock of a bay at Tunis. My classical background (latin and greek) associated her with Dido, waiting for Aeneas at Carthage (Cartago). Looking back this one reminds me of stained glass but already with my roundism style employed. I consider roundism as the prolongation of cubism.

Composition

Asma’s beautiful female and round features I tried to mimic in the wave patterns. From a compositionary point of view all the movement in the negative space around the female form was utterly necessary. I had to come up with some interesting geometrics in order to compensate for the fact that the negative space makes up for 2/3rd of the canvas. This is the main problem with all dominant factors looking rather lenghty because of the lack of much width. The risk is that the figure would look rather thin compared to the width of the canvas and that surely would undermine all diction. Hence the negative space must play a more significant role.

Previous Drawing

This pastel drawing actually is based on my graphite pencil drawing ‘The Birth of New Cubism – 25-12-14’, last of the series under that name. Drawn on Christmas day I thought the series was complete enough and therefor this pastel drawing became so different. It was as if I forcefully wanted to enter new ways. There already were some art works under the name roundism and this one is just another experiment.
