Nieuwe Veenmolen – 19-10-17

Now, there is this mill at The Hague, a place around the corner from where I live, called the ‘Nieuwe Veenmolen‘. Let me sketch you my living environment. That would be Mariahoeve: a nothing wrong residential area from the 1960s, safe but a bit boring. On my way to Brugman Art in Voorburg where I teach I pass by this mill twice a day. It is situated between Bezuidenhout which is built in the 1920s and the railroad tracks from Amsterdam to The Hague. Basically this old mill dating from 1654, is surrounded by all things modern. It almost is like one resilient entity refused to leave and make way for modern times. Anyway, this mill never stops to please my eyes. I should include it in my art and now is the time. Besides that, there are no real pleasant man-made structures in the direct surroundings able to please my artist’s eye.

Landscapish Roundism

After my graphite pencil drawing ‘The Sheik of Araby – 15-10-17’ I was in the mood for some roundism again. There was this urge to do a landscape though. Therefor the mill was a perfect breakout from nudes that I draw so often. In the recent past I already drew a lot of trees, cityscapes and what have you not, cubistically. I remembered the treeline in ‘Vlaardingen 10-06-17’ and so this feeling of flow popped into my mind. As a result the plants on the water side came out as continuous flame-looking figures arising from the water. I also directed them towards the curve of the water side to the right middle section of the drawing. That is how I created flow and rhythym.
