A sketch I did of Rotterdam Overschie, at the river Schie. The main objective was to do a sketch under 2 hours. That is why I did not work it out too much and I liked the impression. These kind of settings are perfect to execute on the spot. I did the first set-up at Overschie though. Clouds quickly robbed the light and with it all beautiful cast shadows. Nevertheless it was necessary to see it in real life and my memory did the rest in my studio.
Epilogue: After almost 6 years I sold it to a collector from Overschie. It is nice to know the drawing has returned to the actual location. Overschie is nice for a short trip anyway. In the Rotterdam area there are plenty of pockets of ancient beauty like Delfshaven and the old harbour. Incidentally, Overschie is where Jongkind made several characteristic paintings I happen to love. Perhaps his sketchy was of depicting the old church is the immediate cause for this drawing.
