Roundism – 01-07-16 (sold)

From Surrealism to Roundism

After my Ooij Polder surrealism a new roundism drawing popped out of my graphite pencil. No surprise I have a big stack of reference pictures in my computer that are just waiting to serve as motifs for my graphite or colored pencil drawings. Whenever I am without inspiration I start browsing through them. However there is no particular method that makes me select a certain one. Maybe that is caused by the x-factor or serendipity itself. It may be so that a motif does not appeal to me for years. Then crash, bang boom something hits me. Pure inspiration or something bigger than me makes me ‘see’ it all of a sudden. This process of selection is of the hands of an artist. It regulates itself.

Jumpy Roundism

The pose could not better match my feel for roundism in this specific period of time. I liked the model making a jump and when you think of all things jumpy one thinks of geomerics. Therefor I tried to emphasize the round shapes like the breasts and buttocks, so they come popping out. In fact this drawing is built up from almost nothing but circles and curves. Pure roundism indeed. To put the stress on the bodily roundness I drew lighter toned circles behind her and in front of her. It is in the hands now of an American collector.
