A new roundism art work after my last graphite pencil drawing ‘Sans Titre – 01-05-18’. The reason is that I found this great reference picture on which the model was heavily backlit. The lighting distorted her figure quite pleasantly, even though earlier glances at it did not inspire me instantly. This having said, suddenly I caught myself in the middle of finding beautiful abstract forms. The goal I put myself was to obtain an almost translucent structure.
The motif in the picture was a little bit too squarish and it did not look right on A4. There was a lot of negative space left and it almost looked like a lumpy box. For some time I was pondering over what to add to the scene to make it more attractive. For no particular reason I associated her hand hanging loose with some kind of claw. It reminded me to my former cat Furia dangling her paw over the edge of the couch. One thing led to another. Consequently I added a more cheakier smile and of course a cat. That is the way creativity flows! Inspiration is nothing but association.
The main thing however was to find an attractive overall composition. Hence I arrange a complex of diagonals, horizontal and vertical structures. straight and curved plaines result in a compelling composition. Personally I like the diagonal movement from low left to her face best. It draws the attention completely to the triangle made by the cat, her face and her hand. It is a statement I can fully subscribe to, regardless of the figurative meaning of it all. So much for narratives!
