A New Shoot to the Roundism Tree

This graphite pencil drawing ‘Roundism – 29-09-16’ is a new shoot on my Roundism tree. It depicts my regular model again. After ‘Sans Titre – 23-09-16’ I was up for something new. Why not use the graceful appearance of my model? Last years I drew her alot. However, this very result is not made during a life drawing session.

An Old Reference Photo

Instead I used an old reference picture I got. You see, in 2014 I had a shoot with her in the fall. That was the first shoot we held and it was love at first sight. In the house of her parents she was beautifully reclining on a batik cloth with Paisley motifs. These I didn’t incorporate, even though I did use them in my oil painting ‘Golden – 18-07-22’. I just love those reclined positions. In such a relaxed pose  I think she is at her best. Even though she is not a tall lady, her body shows all the right curves in the right proportions.

Circular Swirls

The artwork itself is focused on all the circular swirls I could find. There they were: in the shoulder, hip and even the folds in the drapery she is reclining on. The circular patterns are also mirrored so they form each other counterparts. This way, there is variation in repetition and repetition in variation. Another trick I pulled is to only slightly indicate a hand and some vague facial features. This way the viewer can immediately spot the meaning and wander through a geometrical landscape at the same time. The tonal pattern of light and dark repetitions creates rhythm and divides all sections into bitesize proportion. Personally, I like the sketchy look of the result. It doesn’t look overproduced. Instead, it shows a rather frantic search of an artist for the right forms.
