Sans titre – 05-01-18 (sold)

Vivian Leigh

A new one in the sans titre series depicting Gone with the Wind actress Vivian Leigh. The last one was my graphite pencil drawing ‘Sans Titre – 05-05-17’, depicting Darja Collin. Many surrealist, cubist and impressionist drawings separate that one from this new project. Therefor it was about time to do a new one and for some time I did not find a suitable moviestar until I saw her online on Youtube.

Sans Titre Series

The Sans Titre series entails tens of drawings now and it shows quite some development. The first ones were in the style of new cubism and evoluated into a complete new style. I am not sure if I will extend the series to many more to come. Modern moviestars do not interest me that much and perhaps one day I will hit a brick wall of copyrights. The celebrities of old do not bring legal obsticles that much though.

I like her cool looking appearance hiding a turmoil of complex emotions, wandering from depression, alcoholism to briljant actorship and back, ending in her death by tuberculosis. I tried to capture her vulnerability as well as her ability to strike a pose. I think I succeeded in getting them both at the same time. Hopefully will the art deco lighting encapsulate her in the time frame she is supposed to dwell. For eternity I am afraid. People always will connect her to the 1930s and 1940s.

Actually straight forms in the portrait are the facial contour delineation and the lapel of her jacket. Most forms have round shapes or are curved. Frankly I found the preliminary setup a bit too roundish. In order to compensate for all this roundism I added the angular ligher shape around her head. Personally I think the depiction of the hands turned out quite nicely. They did not need extra or more complex forms.
