Summer in Holland – 25-07-18

Ambiguous Image

This graphite pencil drawing ‘Summer in Holland – 25-07-18’ is an ambiguous image. In the dead of summer it is so hot here in The Hague I almost had double vision. That is why I serve two women for the price of one. Now seriously, in fact it was one of the most challenging drawings I ever made. The girl in the lower right corner came easy. She was the starting point to begin with. Until so far no real surrealist moves. To be honest, starting this drawing I didn’t have a clue what to make of it. Sheer copying naturally is a death sin even though the scenery in the picture was great already.

Trusting the Universe

You see, there was an attractive division in light and dark values. Sheer copying those is tempting yet unforfilling. As artist I always feel obliged to add value to the mix. Therefor I trust my intuition and the universe. They always guide me towards something original. Not immediately though and the sweat already was dripping off my brows. Until…

Same Buttocks

I saw the potential of the split between her two lower legs. To me it seemed some kind of spine Hence the idea arose to have another person attach to it. They share the same buttocks. Once I saw the arms below them, they could also become the legs of the upper woman. Then I saw the foot in the upper left corner also could form a shoulder blade. Last but not least I also put myself in. Can you spot me? A hint: I tucked myself in the same way as I did in my surrealist oil painting ‘The Madonna of The Hague (2015)’.
