The Carolingian Chapel – 30-06-18

When I was visiting the Bastei, a new museum at the base of the Valkhof at Nijmegen, Gelderland, Netherlands, my eye caught the Sint-Nicolaaskapel or better known as ‘The Carolingian Chapel’. This church was part of a much bigger complex – Het Valkhof – where Charlemagne and the Romans dwelled. I was born and raised in Nijmegen and I know the spot so well and was struck anew by the mystery of eras gone by, lush tree lines and my memory sending me back to childhood. This drawing is an attempt to capture all these feelings.
