The Hague forest – 23-06-15

A Place Quite Near

This graphite pencil drawing ‘The Hague Forest (Haagse Bos) – 23-06-15’ actually depicts a place quite near. It became a bit of impressionism. For long I thought it to be the Haagse Bos. However, I found out it was part of the adjacently located Estate Reigersbergen. Anyway, it’s just around the corner from where I live. Now I come to think of it, I’m quite privileged here in The Netherlands. Where can you step outside your apartment, drive to the end of the street and enter a beautiful forest? There are tree separate forest-like parks there. One is the Haagse Bos, adjacent is estate Reigersbergen wich abuts park Marlot. They all run into eachother. This very spot with the water and the treeline is situated at the end of a beautiful path. You can enter it halfway the Bezuidenhoutseweg. When I feel my energy is drained I recharge myself over there.

Impressionist Style

Originally I had it in me to execute this one in my roundism style. It didn’t turn out to become a cubist drawing though. Somehow I felt better, right from the start, to focus on the reflections in the water. The heavy use of chiaroscuro also brought me to the idea of an impressionist view. Consequently, the back has become very dark whereas the foliage in the front catches light. Water reflections are very rewarding. Not very difficult for me to capture and a bit of magic for the viewer. One of them on Facebook found it very scary. He claimed he saw ghosts in the darker areas. How could I have made such a horrifying drawing? To me, such remarks are the best. Then I know I have evoked something.
