This graphite pencil drawing ‘Vlaardingen – 14-09-16 (Sold) depicts the city in roundish forms. It is a return to citycapes after ‘Roundism – 08-09-16 (Sold)’. The one before that was ‘Schiedam – 02-09-16 (Sold)’ and I like how that one turned out to become. So it became the inspirational source to depict Vlaardingen, a place I never visited before. Even though it is close by there are many places and small towns one never visits. Simply because there is no need to or you haven’t got any business there. That is why I regularly choose those cities and towns and visit them, on a whim really. It turned out Vlaardingen was worth the trip. Built around a harbour and a couple of main streets in the center. In fact, it’s one of oldest towns. Even older than Rotterdam, although no real old buildings remained.
I remember the first time I drove past the harbour. All of a sudden I saw a beautiful scenery popping to the left of me. There it was, the Grote Kerk (Big Church) across the canal with some boats in the front. On the other side of water there were some buildings and treelines. So I took a picture because I was by car and didn’t have any drawings materials with me. Later I found a parking lot and took some more pictures. Back home, scrolling through all these pictures I found this one iconic. It shows all the typical features that you can associate with this city. Especially the boats and the church of course.
