Voorburg – 12-05-19 (sold)

A Beautiful Spot

There is this specific spot in Voorburg at the beginning of the Herenstraat where it is particulary beautiful. There is a small ditch in front of an old mansion with a big tree in front of it, making it a rather English site than typical dutch. I loved doing the cast shadows in this one and they make me long for summer days during which I can depict them wherever I may be the next coming months.

Drawing Outdoors

In fact I started drawing outdoors last month at the Sluisjes at Leidschendam where I had dinner with my parents after we visited all the etching works of Rembrandt at the Rijksmuseum. I had only a small A6-size sketchbook with me. I discovered I quite like the sketchy look of a 1 hour drawing. This one of Voorburg already is a little bit more elaborated. Even though the ‘rough edge’ of the aforementioned Leidschendam drawing has disappeared quite quickly I like the look of this one as well. It has the allure of a grand drawing.

Earlier Drawing

The tree at the left near the water I drew before. It was graphite pencil drawing ‘Voorburg – 22-04-14’. Looking back in retrospective I am quite surprized it shows the same hatched strokes quality. Perhaps I can conclude it shows neither deterioration nor progress. Therefor I like them both and I made worse in the past.
