Park Sonnenburg in Voorburg

This graphite pencil drawing ‘Voorburg – 23-07-19’ is all about an impressionist view on sunlight between trees. How leafy can it be! After teaching today I went to Park Sonnenburgh in Voorburg, Netherlands just around the corner. Voorburg has this neat little parks, such as the Juliana-Bernhard park, Noteboom park and Vreugd en Rust. However, I hardly visited this one and a closer look revealed some gems that needed to be discovered. Like many of the parks in the region Haaglanden in each of them there are key features. These are rhododendrons, little ponds, broad-leaved trees and a 17th century mansion.

Some Time Left

After class I had some time left before I went for dinner with friends. As a lawyer back in the day I had to work against the clock all the time. Contrary to what many artists feel I do not resent deadlines though. To me it often is the method to break free and be less cautious. It is about experimenting and trying to create a breakthrough in time. Therefor this one was done in one go, without too much proportional measuring. It was the first since my graphite pencil drawing ‘Beek 21-07-19’ that I completed at the very spot.

Always the Sun

Undeniably the light was perfect. Late in the afternoon there was this incredible light shattered across the landscape by the bushes and the trees. I always like this clairobscur play. As an artist I am dependant on the light and the absence of it. Surely blocking in the light with my graphite pencil is my religion. I kept this one under one hour giving it a kind of rough impressionistic edge. Next thing was that the dinner (Thai) tasted real good. Thanks Milko and Pae. Every time I look at this drawing I have that sweet and spice taste in my mouth again.
