This pastel pencil drawing ‘The Continuum of the Muse – 2025-07-25’guides you into the world of magic realism. Imagine a muse. She sits for you and if the click is right, magic will appear. The bond between a model and an artist is sacred. As stated before, it is sui generis, nex to family ties, friendships and romantic involvements. What could be more suitable than to do a follow-up of the two drawings celebrating this bond, back in 2019?

Magic Realism

These two were magic realist ones as well and lately I have become interested in magic realism again. Certainly, after reading ‘The Coming of Jocham Stiller’ by Hubert Lampo. Surrealism forms the opposite artistic approach. Even though I have made several surrealist paintings in the past, I feel myself drawing to this other movement. I can relate to what’s real but feels uncanny nonetheless. Such was the subject of this pastel pencil drawing.

What Lies Beneath

The basic idea was that of a ‘trompe l’oeuil’. The model’s features running off canvas, straight onto the couch she’s sitting on. Such does not constitute magic realism but my addition of triangular and slanted forms does. What do you think? I felt inclined to introduce these, just to counterbalance all things vertical and horizontal in this drawing. By putting the stress on geometry and all things stemming from the implicite order, something magic appears too. Well, these are perhaps even more real than the world of meanings we live in. Maybe you find a disclosure to this realm of what lies underneath magic and even eerie?

More to Come?

Just a couple of thoughts. They were spawning this little piece. Already the sixth on this sketching paper. Not special to many possibly, but most dear to me. I might even create some more magic, using this paper.
