Bettie Page was an American pin-up of the 1950s that stood for her sexual liberation in an America that yet had to face the sexual revolution of the 1960s. I always have loved her curves. For sure one could say her entire body is a true work of art. Therefor I drew and painted her many times already in each and any conceivable style. Maybe you remember the last one, being my surrealist graphite pencil drawing ‘Bettie Page – 24-02-17’. I did this one in my own roundism style though because I like to vary regularly. The diagonal of the body I counterbalanced with a conical curve directed to the upper right of this graphite pencil drawing. Another goal I put was to keep the dominant object open as much as possible, breathing into the negative space. The reference picture invited me too due to the nice highlights and subtle shading.
Those who look closely can see me inside a small sphere in the lower left corner. Sometimes I portray myself in a metal ball, being one of those Chinese balls you can swing in your arm. My oil painting ‘The Madonna of The Hague (2015)’ is an example and shows the same studio and jacket. In general I like the idea of worlds intersecting or a world in a world for that matter. Through this a work of art becomes more than a pretty picture. Moreover, it can offer multiple themes. Even if they do not match, the combination therefor is perfect. It is what a famous dutch autor Adriaan van Dis would have said.
