This graphite pencil drawing ‘Oss – 05-01-17’ depicts a view on its cityscape from the roof of Museum Jan Cunen. There I was together with my parents. It was 26th December 2016 we here in The Netherlands like to call ‘2nd Christmas Day’ (Boxing Day). Nothing much to do we thought we’d visit a museum and this one was open. My parents knew the place but I never came to visit it. That’s because I live on the other side of the country, right here in The Hague.
There are simply so many museums in Holland you can’t visit them all. Occasionally you can indeed next to all the hustle and bustle of being a busy artist. Jan Cunen is a nice cousy little museum with a great regular collection. Like so many they struggle to survive, often dependant on volunteers. Nevertheless, I am happy they manage to live on and therefor I visit them as many as I can.
Now the view on Oss itself. The weather that day wasn’t really great but hey, it’s winter! On the other side there were some lovely clouds though. They beautifully intertwined with the trees at the left of the drawing. Since the universe is all about the waveform I decided to depict just that. Hence, the hefty flow of the clouds. I often like the contrast of nature versus straight building lines. Another reason for doing so is the buildings in the front are rather horizontal. Too much of a good thing perhaps. So nature came to my aid. A similar trick I pulled in my graphite pencil drawings ‘Vlaardingen – 14-09-16 (Sold)’ and ‘Schoonhoven – 22-02-16’. One can say these straight versus round contrasts have become a key feature in my oevre to date.
