One of These Parks

Another drawing of a chiaroscuro lane at Park Sonnenburgh in Voorburg, Netherlands. Conveniently lingering about around the corner of where I work. Although the scenery suggests a vast forest it actually is a small lane in a rather modest park. It is not an extensive one but examplary of parks in and about The Hague. One thing typical of this region is the abundant presence of parks. They all are built around former country houses inhabitated by the upper class. There are lanes lingering through, have at least one pond and an old 17th or 18th century grand mansion. In fact they are one of my favorites on the artistic menu. Whereas forest can be rather dense parks like these have open spaces, giving room for the light to penetrate. It lightens up things and creates beautiful contrasts as can be seen in my graphite pencil drawing ‘Voorburg 22-07-19’.

Rather Impressionistic

This having said, perhaps this one is an exception to my artistic rule as stated hereabove. Certainly it looks densely packed with trees but there was enough light hitting the path sideways. It is sufficient to create needed rhythym. There are some vertical columns of light and dark as well and the path itself showed subtle diagonals with a vague vanishing point. In order to keep it impressionistic I kept this sketch rather rough in my typical diagonal hatched strokes. Of course I made sure to avoid lines running in the direction of the tree trunk contour delineations. The result is a kind of pleasant blur that suggests more than it reveals. The spectator’s hungry wish to see patterns in all things vague will do the rest, I think. After all, all is well that only looks well.
