Frida Kahlo

Another one in the Sans Titre series. In the first place I am not sure what I thought about Frida Kahlo, except for her strong personality. In general I sometimes liked her paintings and then I didn’t. What I do have in common with her is that we both are autodidacts and that we like(d) to go our own way in life. Nevertheless I come across her works once in a while and that is why I decided to draw her. Sometime ago I saw a lovely – rare – nude photograph and thought I’d include her in my sans titre and roundism series.

Furia

After I read her biography I was very charmed by her love for animals and she definitely stole my heart with her posing with two cats. The strangest coincidence of all is that the postion of the lower positioned cat was an exact match to the position of my cat Furia who deceased back in 2016. Cat lover as I am did I captured it instantly and there is is, reclining on my couch for all times and you can see the drawing here. Therefor this drawing also serves as a second hommage to Furia.

Oil Painting

It took a while but finally in 2020 I made an oil painting, called ‘Frida Kahlo (2020)’. Even though I extended the theme to her love for the Mexicanidad and communism, I kept the basic feel with the Santa Muerte and the golden circle swirls.
