This colored pencil ‘The Shins (Live@Paradiso) – 20-04-17’ is a lovely, yet unplanned drawing. After ‘Ode to the Harpsichord – 14-04-17 (Sold)’ I didn’t have a project under way anymore. Then I got invited to visit rock palace Paradiso in Amsterdam. A world famous spot where all great artists of our times have performed. Prince and The Rolling Stones surely are among them. Then, American band ‘The Shins’ did a performance last 30th March 2017. So there I was, standing in the back of the hall. Of course the music was fantastic but as artist I’m always focused on how all things look. Consequently I became fascinated by the strong cubistic light triangles and the colour differences (yellow, purple, red).
So I took a lot of pictures. These strong lights in all kinds of colors are very different from what I normally do. Hence, very inspiring I must say. Who can use these red in full saturated abundance, weren’t it for something else than a live performance? Therefor I had good reason to try these out as main theme in a drawing. Last colored pencil ‘Roundism – 06-03-17’ was a successful experiment, using less strong colours. The trick was to depict not a full aray of details, simply because they disappear during such a concert. Only the light is important and the music for sure. But the latter I couldn’t draw, only the impression of the music translated into color. That’s why I used lime green to have it both contrast with the red and the purple. It containts both yellow and green, complementing both. This way the hefty frock sounds echo through complementary passion.
