In 2013 I started this clairobscur lit nude and tucked it in one of pastel maps, only to forget about it for years and years.

After careful considering I chose for a rendering with hatched strokes like I am used to in doing pastels and many a drawing, even though this is the first time in oil.

This graphite pencil drawing ‘Roundism – 19-08-20’ is walk down the path of Man Ray’s solarization and combination with cubism.

This pastel drawing ‘Sea Swimming – 30-07-20’ is an experiment on a new kind of paper. The pastel particles stick to the paper beautifully.

These Corona days show little or no model sessions at all. However my model and I felt confident to do a new session after a long time, taking all precautions.

Last day of the year and completed a work in progress I started during a live session with my regular model. With just two simple LED reading lamps I got the atmosphere right

My regular model comes to visit me every month and this time I had the plan to put only two small LED light sources around her.

Last Thursday 21th of November I had my regular model over again in my studio and it was a good session. I placed two led light sources next to her, creating a nice razor light over her body.

Model sketching time again. My mind was occupied with many other projects but live model sketching always has priority. Whereas skecthing often is called the primary process, live model sketching I consider to be primus inter pares.

Drawng often is called the primary process and I like it so much, brimming over with an ocean of ideas, that I forget about transfering those ideas to the secondary stage: the canvas. There always is something to dust off and in 2017 I used ‘Nude – 03-09-15’ to work out a bigger theme, called ‘The Widow of Aleppo – 18-05-17’, after Rembrandt’s painting Jeremiah lamenting Jerusalem’s destruction. Since the war in Syria sort of came to an end but the people still suffer, I found it appropiate to do this anew but then in oil.

This graphite pencil drawing ‘The Artist and His Model – 22-02-19’ celebrates the holy bond between the artist and his model. Together we create magic!

Last session with my model I wanted to have her pose a little bit more risqué but counterbalance it by keeping the hatched strokes rather rough than to finepolish them into tonal matching strokes that would approach realism too much.

The object was to do a pastel drawing similar to ‘model session – 17-01-19’ but to keep the hatched strokes rather wide. I also wanted to combine more complementary colour combinations in order to get a greyish look while on the other hand those hatched strokes look very saturated up close.

This pastel drawing ‘Model Session – 17-01-19’ I began last Thursday. My model beautifully arranged in an Andrew Cross composition together with the folds.

This evening I had a great session with my main model throughout the years. She is slender, knows what I want and shows dark skin tones, giving my the possibility to fool around with all sorts of colours.

The third drawing of Julia Gómez Avilés rendered with colour pencils. Last week I bought a great collection of Prismacolour pencils that brought me great joy using them

A classic model study I did yesterday at Leidschendam, Netherlands.

Some months ago I started attending some drawing sessions at Rotterdam where I did short positions again.

Yesterday’s session at Rotterdam offered Gabriëlle, the model of that Sunday afternoon. She had great hip bones and was slender, thus showing great angles and triangles with her body.

Short positions at live model sketching took me back to reinvent my way rendering human bodies and together with my new found Pastelmat by Clairefontaine I was able to experiment with new ways.

A 15 min. sketch I made yesterday during a live model session at Rotterdam.

A rather loose cubistic sketch done with colour pencils. For the 4th time in a row I used the same (indian) model. Her skin allows me to use a lot of yellow which I counterbalanced with edgy purple planes.

A 5 min. sketch I made yesterday at a session at Rotterdam. Fun to do short positions again.

An impressionistic approach to live model sketching with one of my favorite models – done at Voorburg. Netherlands.

This pastel drawing ‘Into the Light – 15-06-17’ is something different. Enter the gloom or into the light?
