I saw this great vintage picture of a nude on the roof top of an open van and I liked the styled planes it already showed: the squares in the open door, some round ones in the model and some great diagonals. The woman has great nipples and I guess I will not post this one on some of the social media.
Last weekend I visited De Lakenhal at Leiden, Netherlands to see the exhibition ‘Rembrandt and the Golden Age’. Quite nice, also to see the refurbished museum. When I looked out the windows at the front of the building I was captured by the Oude Vest on which the light was filtered by the museum glass. It looked a little bit sinister and there were gloomy clouds in the sky which lead me to draw this one.
In the dead of summer means I am in the midst of the outdoor sketching season. Although I did not complete this one on the spot the invention of the basic composition and planal distribution were done at Katendrecht, Rotterdam. The vista is directed at Hotel New York that nowadays looks almost encapsulated by skycrapers. I was there long ago but the cityscape almost was inrecognizable. The watertaxi was done in my studio because they keep on moving all the time. Nevertheless a new typical sight in swinging Rotterdam. Although, the drawing seems rather detailed, I kept it quite impressionistical.
I was listening to ‘Between the sheets’ by The Isley Brothers when I completed this one so I tried to capture the sensual feel of the song in my drawing. The curvy sheets invited me to render the body in in the same way. At some spots I let the body flow into the sheets, following the diagonal rhythym. I often tell my students true abstraction lies in imagining the impossible and making sound and essential choices out of an endless sea of possibilities. Without making them any art work becomes plane realistic and that is or should be no fun for anyone.
At the front my flat overlooks a great cityscape of The Hague, Netherlands, where I live. Already used as a styled (roundism) background in my oil painting ‘The Madonna of The Hague (2015)’ I decided to do a small sketch of the same view, now enriched with some extra high buildings like ‘New Babylon’ in the city centre.
